UI/UX

A window of Microsoft Word for an old version of Windows. A ridiculous number of optional toolbars are enabled and docked at the top, left, right, and bottom of the window, leaving only a small view at the center for the actual document. What an old-school aesthetics.

Here is an alt-text description of the image:
The image shows a window of Microsoft Word from an older version of Windows. The file name is "newmaint_olds - Microsoft Word". The Word document contains a table titled "Goodwrench Service Plus." The table lists various car maintenance services and their prices. Some of the services listed include: "Change engine oil and filter, lube chassis (up to 5 quarts of oil)" for $22.95, "Replace front brakes*" for $129.95, "Replace PCV valve" for $7.95, "Replace rear brakes*" for $129.95, "Change transmission fluid & filter*" for $89.95, "Flush transmission fluid" for $89.95, "Change transmission fluid & filter - Aurora" for $129.95, and "Check air conditioner system (plus freon)" for $43.95. Several toolbars with various icons are visible at the top of the Word window. A "Help" menu is visible on the left of the Word document. A "New Frame" menu is visible on the right of the Word document. The bottom of the window displays the status bar with information like "Normal," "Times New Roman," font size "12," and a language setting of "English (U.S.)." The zoom level is set to "100%."

Personally, I think one of the worst parts is the rotated text.
Like, that's *too many UI elements*, but you can *theoretically* imagine operating that (why you wouldn't use shortcuts instead is another matter).
But the rotated text is just, not comfortable to read. It defeats the purpose of *having text there*.

This is why Microsoft developed the Office ribbon – a tabbed set of toolbars.
It was very cleverly researched and designed by Jensen Harris' team:

I get the joke but, still agree with the ones who said this was close to peak UI design. Functionality grouped into optional toolbars, everything customizable, yet still very clearly defined and universally understood across different platforms.
